Goal.com Chief On Governor's Gold Cup...

For all you Goal.com readers who don’t know, Mr. Kapil Chettri, the real world identity of ‘ckapil@Goal.com’ (as you have seen littered over various parts of the site), is the Business Development Head for Goal.com India, and is the brain behind the functioning of the company in the country.

Mr. Chettri has been in Gangtok for the past few days, soaking up the atmosphere of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup, which has begun amidst a lot of fan following, music, and colour in the city.

Says Mr. Chettri, “I’m not surprised at the success of the tournament, as domestic football tournaments are way bigger crowd pullers than even domestic cricket tournaments in India. But the carnival atmosphere all over town, even in the evenings when the matches are over, is simply phenomenal. Everyone, right from the taxi driver to the hotel receptionist is talking football, which is heartening to see.”

It’s no exaggeration, as the strategic placement of the event between the Dussehra and Diwali makes the whole month one big festival for the Sikkimese, and the way they enjoy and celebrate is incomparable and simply unmatched by any other football event in any other city or state in India. The tournament has been going on for 30 years non-stop, a record in the country, which is a result of some wonderful planning and organizing by the Sikkim FA.

Mr.Chettri, who was also the Guest of Honour on the second day of the tournament, gives full credit to the SFA, and says, “Kudos to the organizers, for showing exemplary commitment, foresight, and vision. It’s rare to see such a well-organized football event in India, and that’s because every person involved knows his/her role. It is only because of events like these that the state has produced players like Bhaichung, Nirmal Chhetri, and many others.”

He reserves special praise for the main team behind the tournament, SFA President Mr. Tempo Bhutia, Vice President Mr. Karma Bhutia, Gen Secy Mr. Menla Ethenpa, Mr. B.K.Roka, and Publicity Secretary Mr. Shyam Pradhan.

According to the man, the lack of I-League clubs isn’t really a major problem for the local people.

“The Sikkimese know their football, and enjoy good competition much more than mere big names”, he says, echoing the views of SFA President Mr. Tempo Bhutia. However, that doesn’t stop the man from lamenting the lack of big clubs at the event, which also sees the locals miss out on a chance to watch Sikkimese heroes in action.

“The AIFF should try and avoid collision of any of their calendar events with the Governor’s Gold Cup. It’s the longest uninterrupted football cup in India, and sees 20000 plus people pack the stands each day, which may not even be the case for some of the I-League games.”

Not drifting from the topic of the AIFF, Mr. Chettri, who has grown up in the northeast himself, points out, “The AIFF should ensure that such initiatives all over the country receive moral, financial, and organizational support.”

Talking about Goal.com’s involvement in the event, he points out that the site’s strategy in India right from the start has been to promote football from the grassroots, and report organizations that do the same, which is the only way the sport can be taken forward in the country.

Subsequently, he makes an interesting statement, outlining his vision for the website in the country.

“At the moment, there is a gap between the football stars of the country, and the football fans of the country. The stars are waiting for the fans, and the fans are waiting for the stars. Goal.com wants to become that platform, or the bridge, where the two can meet to take football to another level altogether.”

Meanwhile, officials of the Sikkim FA are delighted with the website’s involvement in the event, as for the first time, the tournament that was confined to the people of the hills can now be followed by football fans all over India and because of Goal.com reach beyond India.

The SFA and Goal.com have also intimated that they have entered into a mutual agreement that will see both organizations complimenting each other in various ways. The details are not out at the moment, and will be revealed in the days to come.

And we can’t even get a word from Mr. Chettri before he trots off to get back among the fans to follow the live action, and I don’t blame him.

There could be nothing more interesting than the tournament in town at the moment, and for the next 10 days!

GG Cup Brought Me Into Limelight - Bhaichung

The 30th Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup has kicked off and the tournament holds special importance for the man whose name is synonymous with Indian football in the modern era – Bhaichung Bhutia.

The Indian skipper first came to notice with his impressive performance in this very tournament more than 16 years ago.

“This is the tournament which brought me into limelight and helped me enter East Bengal in those days,” said Bhaichung nostalgically.

Would he still want to play in the Governor’s Gold Cup, a question which his mentor and uncle Karma Bhutia requested Goal.com to ask.

“I am employed by Mohun Bagan and I can’t decide which tournament I want to play. If Mohun Bagan would have played the tournament, then I would have featured.”

The Governor’s Gold Cup is a very important tournament in Sikkim and the government backs the event by allowing the officials working in their office to leave for the games an hour before the scheduled kick-off if they produce the tickets.

But Bhaichung feels that tournament isn’t just about Sikkim.

“It is still the biggest football tournament in the north-eastern region. It was big in the national scene as well before the National League commenced.”

Bhaichung, who hails from Tinkitam village in Sikkim, feels that the tournament is a big festival in the north-eastern calendar.

“The Governor’s Gold Cup is being played for so many years and the buzz is still on. It’s a great festival.”

Bhaichung may not be in action in the tournament but he is being represented through his team United Sikkim Sports Club, who won the opening day clash against Shimla Youngs.

“I spoke to the team after they won. Shimla Youngs isn’t an easy side to win against. My message to them is to continue doing well and keep improving. The first target is to enter the quarter-finals.”

However, the rookies from national U-19 team will fill the void.

“We have planned to assemble some players from U-19 team and some other clubs”, Club Coach Bal Gopal Maharjan said, “We will definitely compete in the tournament thinking the title in mind”.

Earlier in 29th edition, both Nepalese teams were in the final but NRT defeated Three Star to seal the bet. However, they are also trying to call their three players who are plying their trade in Bangladesh.

It is not yet sure whether striker Santosh Saukhala and defender Lok Bandhu Gurung will return from Bangladesh reportedly ending their salary dispute with the clubs.

“We know that teams are strong in the competition but they (opponents) should also know that we are coming to the competition” Maharjan cautioned other teams.

Three Star Club will leave Nepal on October 19, having the quarterfinal match on 21st October.

Governor's Gold Cup: It's Shyam Thapa vs Chima Okerie

Looking forward to the third day of the Governor's Gold Cup, one can't help but focus especially on the game between Mohan Bagan SAIL and New Delhi Heroes, in which the spotlight will be on the two star managers...

More than the contesting teams, all eyes will be on the coaches of Mohan Bagan SAIL and New Delhi Heroes in a much anticipated show down between Shyam Thapa and Cheema Okorie tomorrow in the pre-quarterfinal match of the All India Governor’s Gold Cup here at Paljor Stadium here.

Both Thapa and Okorie, both football legends in their era are coaching Mohan Bagan SAIL and New Delhi Heroes respectively. The two clubs have been pitted against each other in tomorrow’s game which is a virtual final as the tournament is being organized in a knock out format.

The organizers, Sikkim Football Association (SFA), expects a capacity crowd in tomorrow’s game as both Thapa and Okorie are famous in the hill region. “Shyam Thapa is a hero in these parts while people here still recall the exploits of Cheema during the Gold Cup”, said Menla Ethanpa, SFA general secetary.

Knowing that any slip will see his club out of the tournament, Mohan Bagan SAIL coach Shyam Thapa kept his cards close to his chest when asked about his strategies against Okorie’s team. “Any team coached by Cheema Okorie is bound to be good and New Delhi Heroes have already played in the junior national league. Their team is good”, said Thapa.

He said that it would have helped a lot if he could have seen New Delhi Heroes in action earlier. “The Delhi side is much unknown and it is our first encounter with this club. I will be making tactical changes as the match progress”, he said.

About his side, the coach said that the boys in Mohan Bagan SAIL are good but has not received sufficient exposure. “There are good boys in my team who are from Sikkim, Mizoram, Manipur and other parts of the country. Only thing is that we don’t have much matches under our belt while New Delhi Heroes have been regularly playing matches”, said Thapa.

»Comments Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom In a four minute blitz, Bir Bahadur Pradhan netted two fine goals against Darjeeling which were enough to send his team, Sikkim Police into the pre-quarter final stage of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup today.

Sikkim Police had entered into today’s match against Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) as overwhelming favourites and dominated the early match proceedings played here at Paljor Stadium. However, the policemen had to wait until the 74th minute to draw first blood when its striker Bir Bahadur Pradhan volleyed a cross into the rival’s net. This goal triggered wild celebrations among the home crowd.

Another round of celebrations came for the home crowd within the next four minutes. Again it was Pradhan who scored his and the match’s second goal in the 78th minute. He pounced on a loose ball right outside the box, strode in unchallenged and unleashed a thunderbolt that crashed into the net.

Pradhan’s brace enabled Sikkim Police to win over Darjeeling by 2 goals to 0. However, if Darjeeling players had managed to capitalize on their opportunities, the scoreline would have been different. First in the 28th minute, Darjeeling striker Santosh Lama failed to beat Sikkim Police goalkeeper Bimal Bagdas in a one-to-one position.

Then, moments before the second half, the Darjeeling side wasted a golden chance. Their central forward Nilendra Dewan had beaten everyone including the goalkeeper but instead of finishing the job, he chose to pass the ball to his team mate instead of scoring which was easily snuffed out by a regrouping Sikkim Police defence.

With today’s victory, Sikkim Police now faces former Gold Cup champions BSF (Jhalandar) in the pre-quarterfinals on October 17. Sikkim Police has become the second team to enter into the second round in the tournament after United Sikkim who defeated Delhi Simla Youngs yesterday.
