Land of the Rising Sun beckons

In the second part of our feature on the J.League’s ‘Asian Berth’ policy for next season, the-afc.com looks at how the news has been received by other Member Associations.

By Etsuko Miyazaki

The J.League-sponsored ‘Asian Berth’, which promises to pluck unsung talent from the footballing backwaters of the continent and plant them in Asia’s foremost league, has been hailed as a ‘game-changer’ by football aficionados.

The revolutionary gambit promises to usher in a fresh wave of hope for talented yet unlucky footballers for whom playing in better leagues remains a distant dream.

Unveiled last month, the aptly-named ‘Asian Berth’ guarantees one slot in each of the 33 J1 and J2 clubs for a deserving player from AFC’s 46 MAs which range from solid leagues like Saudi Arabia and Australia to lesser known ones like Brunei and Nepal.

Not surprisingly, the move has earned acclaim from officials, players and fans alike.

Nakorn Poungbubpha, manager of Thai powerhouse Krung Thai Bank FC, said; “If our members play in the J.League, our country and Krung Thai Bank FC will gain recognition not only in Japan but also throughout Asia.”

Annop Singtothong, Director of fellow Thai League outfit Chonburi FC, pointed to the long-term effects.

“I think it is an excellent idea. Our players can gain a lot of experience and the club also will benefit from this experience which will help to improve the skills of the team in the future,” said the Chonburi boss who saw his team play in the AFC Champions League this year.

Poungbubpha agreed. “We expect the player to utilise his J.League experience as a coach in the future.”

PROFESSIONALISM

Further, a decent spell in the J.League is expected to impress the virtues of professionalism on the players who are likely to hail from the backwaters of Asian football.

Anthony Dias, a Malaysia football fan, said: “I think most of Asian football is completely lacking in professional ways of the game and here is where this idea can show the way to others.”

The philosophy found excellent support among the players’ fraternity.

“I keenly look forward to playing in the J.League and I think I will do well if I have a chance to play there,” said Chonburi mid-fielder Arthit Sunthornphit.

“I think there will be a huge demand for the one single berth reserved for Asian players in the J1 and J2.”

Fellow playmaker Kriangkrai Pimrat echoed Sunthornphit’s eagerness. “It will be my pleasure to join the J.League and I will try my best to do if I receive an opportunity.”

FFA APPLAUDS

The idea was applauded by Football Federation Australia, with a spokeswoman saying “it will lead to improved standards and quality of competition”.

“FFA is of the view that any move to increase the opportunities available to players within the Asian Football Confederation is good for the entire Confederation as it will lead to improved standards and quality of competition,” said FFA’s spokeswoman who also revealed that a similar plan was being mulled for the A-League.

“FFA is considering increasing the number of visa players permitted within the Hyundai A-League from next season (commencing in 2009)."

Governor's Gold Cup: Collins Delighted With Win

USSC's Nigerian recruit Eze Collins spoke to Goal.com after the game against Simla Youngs, in which the striker scored the winning goal...

For the small club from Sikkim, the value of their victory against their much vaunted opponents, Simla Youngs, cannot be stated highly enough. The United Sikkim Sports Club made it to the pre-quarter final stage of the tournament after beating the Delhi side 2-1, thanks to a 73rd minute winner from their Nigerian recruit Eze Collins.

"It was a great victory for us, and we beat them in every department. They're a strong side with some good players, but we coped well and got the win. I'm sure we'll do well in the next match as we're improving every day." The 23-year old Nigerian plies his trade in Bhutan for Bhutan Transports, but was called to play for USSC in this tournament by India skipper Baichung Bhutia.

"Baichung is a good friend of mine, and once he gave me a call, I couldn't say no. He said the team needed a bit of experience to blend with the youth, and so I'm here". Eze was also full of praise for the organizers and the stadium, and called the atmosphere in the town of Gangtok "carnival-like", which is getting even better with each passing day.

He was a bit more modest about his goal, which was a wonderful one, and showed what he possesses as a player, pace, power, and clinical finishing. "I would like to dedicate the goal to Mr.Karma Bhutia, who is the technical director of USSC, and who has shown a lot of faith in me."

When asked to give a message to Goal.com readers, all he said was, "The Governor's Gold Cup is a big tournament, one where you'll get to see tomorrow's superstars, so keep an eye on it!"

Governor's Gold Cup: United Sikkim Remain Cautious

Despite winning the tournament opener against their fancied opponents, United Sikkim coach realizes that tougher tests lie ahead...

Though upbeat after defeating a much bigger team, United Sikkim Sporting Club (USSC) coach and former East Bengal player Sherap Lepcha downplayed today’s victory and said that his team will give a ‘much better’ performance in the next game.

Mr. Lepcha had coached the local team to 2-1 victory over Simla Youngs, Delhi in the inaugural match of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament played today here at Paljor Stadium. Shimla Youngs is one of the premier clubs in New Delhi and was expected to fare well in this tournament.

Commenting on his team’s victory, USCC coach Lepcha first congratulated the people of Sikkim. “It is a victory for the people of Sikkim”, he said. Mr. Lepcha said that they were sure of a win today. Our team was good, he said.

His claims were endorsed by the coach of the losing Delhi side, Fuja Tope. “USSC team was good. They had some very good local players which I wished I had in my team”, said Mr. Tope.

The Simla Youngs coach Tope attributed today’s defeat to the ‘tiredness’ and ‘high altitude problems’ that his players had to face while playing in Gangtok. “We were supposed to arrive a couple of days earlier but we reached only yesterday evening and our players were tired. Our key players were new to this altitude and could not acclimatize themselves at this altitude”, Mr. Tope said.

With today’s loss, the Simla Youngs is out of this tournament and leaves another Delhi side, New Delhi Heroes, to carry the challenge of the nation’s capital in this premier tournament.

Governor's Gold Cup: USCC upset Simla Youngs

Baichung Bhutia's club, United Sikkim Sports Club, edged past Simla Youngs in the opening game of the Governor's Gold Cup, booking themselves a spot in the pre-quarters against Jammu & Kashmir Bank...

United Sikkim Sporting Club (USSC) upended the much vaunted Simla Youngs, Delhi by 2-1 in the first match of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament played today here at Paljor Stadium.

The winning goal came from the boots of Nigerian striker Eze Collins of USCC in the 73rd minute. Collins muscled past the defenders of Simla Youngs to connect a low cross from Penn Ike, another Nigerian player playing for USSC.

Earlier, Ugochukwo Ogbuka had given Simla Youngs the lead in the 31st minute by converting a penalty. He had been needlessly grounded by USSC within the penalty box. The first half had ended with the scoreline in favour of the Delhi side at 1-0.

The home team came roaring in the second half in search of an equalizer which came in the 56th minute. Local lad, Don Tshering Lepcha headed a corner into an empty net after the Shimla Youngs goalie ventured out into hopelessly out of position. The 17 year old midfielder is a class XI student in a local school.

With this defeat, the Delhi side find themselves out of the tournament which is being organized in a knock out format.

Meanwhile, the home side faces a much sterner test in the pre-quarterfinal rounds when they take on Jammu and Kashmir Bank team on October 16.
