East Bengal to open campaign against Chiragh United

NEW DELHI: East Bengal will open its campaign against Chiragh United Sports Club in the inaugural match of the second ONGC I-League football championship at the Barasat Stadium, Kolkata, on September 26. Chuni Goswami will inaugurate the competition at 6.30 p.m.

In Goa, Vasco Sports Club and Sporting Clube de Goa will face off at 4 p.m. on the same day.

The second edition of the I-League carrying a prize purse of Rs. 1.25 crore, with the champion team set to receive Rs.50 lakh, will be played in Goa, Mumbai, Ludhiana and Kolkata. About 40 per cent of the matches, mainly in Kolkata, are scheduled to be telecast live by Zee Sports.

Commending the substantial support of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and Zee Sports, the president of the All India Football Federation, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, said he expected much more in future.

In fact, ONGC had reduced its support from Rs. seven crore to Rs. six crore, but the Chairman of the ONGC, R.S. Sharma, assured that his organisation would continue to support the growth of Indian football.

Grounds wanted

Dasmunsi said that the shortcomings of the past were addressed to a great extent, though the non-availability of grounds was a major concern especially in Maharashtra.

“The Cooperage Stadium is not in good shape. We are looking at the option of Kolhapur. We are looking for better infrastructure in Maharashtra,” said Dasmunsi, even as he added that neutral venues at Gurgaon and Delhi would be utilised if necessary.

The AIFF president said that a fourth place prize of Rs.10 lakh was introduced from this edition. The second and third placed teams will receive Rs.28 and Rs.20 lakh respectively.

He assured that there would be a sizeable increase in the allowance for the teams playing their matches in Mumbai, Goa and Kolkata. He sought corporate support for the clubs.

On the request of the chief coach Bob Houghton, the AIFF has been focusing on spotting strong and well-built players from north India.

It was mentioned that the target was the 2011 Asian Cup, and that all efforts would be made to have more international training and competition for the Indian team abroad.

The idea of focussing more on school football was mooted, but the AIFF president was quick to say that it was the responsibility of the School Games Federation and the government, and that his federation did not have the required funds to address the issue.

There will be a fair play award for Rs. one lakh, while the best striker of the league will get Rs.50,000. The best players in different positions apart from an overall ‘best player’ will get Rs.25,000 each. Man-of-the-Match award winner in every game will get Rs. 5,000.

Dempo will be the team to beat in I-League

New Delhi (PTI): Buoyed by their progress to the AFC Cup semi-finals, Dempo once again look the team to beat when the second edition of the I-League gets underway on Frida.

The team, which had been playing and preying together for a number of seasons, have risen gradually ever since they went down in 2000. But now that they are at the top, they are not going to let go of that mantle easily.

Armando Colaco's boys have won the title twice in the last two seasons - in 2006 when it was the National Football League and last year after it was re-christened the I-League - and would be now looking for a hat-trick when they start their campaign against JCT in Goa on Sunday.

Earlier, Dempo won the then National Football League consecutively in 2003 and 2004. East Bengal coach Subhas Bhowmick had also dreamt of a similar feat they could never achieve it. They finished a disappointing sixth last season and at one point had fetched just eight points from the first 12 matches before Manoranjan Bhattacharya turned the tide.

Bhattacharya have been replaced by India assistant coach Stanley Rozario after a third-place finish in the IFA Premier Division League.

With India players like Sunil Chettri, Subrata Pal, Renedy Singh, Mehrajuddin Wadao and Syed Rahim Nabi in the squad, the fans would be hoping for the team to come good this time around. It is the red-and-gold brigade who set the ball rolling when they take on debutantes Chirag United in the opener at the Barasat Stadium.

I-League: Chettri hopes for a better show

Kolkata (PTI): Sunil Chettri may not have got the right infrastructure to start in his second stint in Kolkata football, but the diminutive national striker feels it should not affect him in getting into the groove for the ONGC I-League that kicks off on Friday.

The former JCT striker had to battle poor referring, horrible ground conditions and an unorganised set-up in the Calcutta Football League where he returned with just two goals from five matches, not the kind of start he was looking for in Kolkata, where he had begun his club football career with Mohun Bagan in 2002.

Lamenting the poor infrastructure, Chhetri said little had changed ever since. "I'm representing one of the best clubs in the country and I am feeling proud of that fact... However, the football scene in Kolkata has not change an iota. It's not that great... still not organised.

The recently-concluded CFL saw some poor refereeing and the ground conditions were horrible," the 24-year-old told PTI. However, the Indian striker said it should not be an excuse as he braces up for their I-League encounter against United SC on Friday.

"We are all professional players. I must not crib about this and give my best shot in the I-League. I've not set any specific goals, I'll go match by match and put my best foot forward. After all, it's a team game... when you score a goal there are others behind it," Chhetri, who had scored seven goals for his former team JCT, in the last season's I-League said.
