»Comments Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom In a four minute blitz, Bir Bahadur Pradhan netted two fine goals against Darjeeling which were enough to send his team, Sikkim Police into the pre-quarter final stage of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup today.
Sikkim Police had entered into today’s match against Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) as overwhelming favourites and dominated the early match proceedings played here at Paljor Stadium. However, the policemen had to wait until the 74th minute to draw first blood when its striker Bir Bahadur Pradhan volleyed a cross into the rival’s net. This goal triggered wild celebrations among the home crowd.
Another round of celebrations came for the home crowd within the next four minutes. Again it was Pradhan who scored his and the match’s second goal in the 78th minute. He pounced on a loose ball right outside the box, strode in unchallenged and unleashed a thunderbolt that crashed into the net.
Pradhan’s brace enabled Sikkim Police to win over Darjeeling by 2 goals to 0. However, if Darjeeling players had managed to capitalize on their opportunities, the scoreline would have been different. First in the 28th minute, Darjeeling striker Santosh Lama failed to beat Sikkim Police goalkeeper Bimal Bagdas in a one-to-one position.
Then, moments before the second half, the Darjeeling side wasted a golden chance. Their central forward Nilendra Dewan had beaten everyone including the goalkeeper but instead of finishing the job, he chose to pass the ball to his team mate instead of scoring which was easily snuffed out by a regrouping Sikkim Police defence.
With today’s victory, Sikkim Police now faces former Gold Cup champions BSF (Jhalandar) in the pre-quarterfinals on October 17. Sikkim Police has become the second team to enter into the second round in the tournament after United Sikkim who defeated Delhi Simla Youngs yesterday.
