Indian National Team: Sunil Chhetri Has The Right Attitude - Indian National Team Coach Bob Houghton

He will succeed...

It’s been more than a month since Sunil Chhetri has joined the Kansas City Wizards and is yet to make his professional debut in the Major League Soccer (MLS) with six matchdays completed. The Indian international scored a hat-trick in one of the University games and did make his competitive appearance for the club in the US Open Game against Colorado Rapids back in the second week of last month where he played one half of the game.

Earlier in an exclusive interview to Goal.com’s Andrea Canales, Chhetri had mentioned of having suffered from a jet lag while in the USA due to the 12 hour gap.

The striker is only the third Indian international after Mohamed Salim (Celtic) and Bhaichung Bhutia (Bury FC) to ply his trade in a foreign league and has also pioneered a path for his national team-mates to follow and consider moving outside India.

Gouramangi Singh is the latest name set to do India proud as he is set for a two week trials with Melbourne Hearts and if successful, he could be the first Indian to play Down Under.

Time and again, the two Indian internationals have showered praise on their national coach, Bob Houghton for having instilled the belief that they could compete with the best and play abroad.

The English coach states that Chhetri would sooner or later succeed given that he had the right approach to the game knowing the fact that he would have to work hard day in and day out in the USA.

Speaking to Goal.com, Houghton said,” The thing about Chhetri is that he has a good attitude and that will help him go a long way. He will do well.”

One hopes that the words of his mentor inspire Chhetri to give his all and thereby, make the millions of Indians proud back home.

Kansas City are currently placed eighth on the standings.
