Governor's Gold Cup: Meet Baichung Bhutia's Mentor!

Mr. Karma Bhutia is one hell of a multi-tasker. He's the vice president of the Sikkim FA, works for the government, runs a football club, and somewhere in between also finds time to play mentor to footballing superstars. Goal.com managed to catch up with him for a brief chat on Baichung, his club, and the foreigners who play for them...

It was indeed an honour to be face-to-face with a man of his stature, someone who’s been an ardent football and sports enthusiast all his life, and a man who’s played such a big role in giving the country it’s first real football superstar.

If you didn’t already know, Mr. Karma Bhutia was Baichung Bhutia’s mentor throughout his younger days, and was the one who brought him to Kolkata at the tender age of 16, to give wings to his already fledging football career. However, he’s also one of the most modest individuals you would ever come across, and refuses to talk about himself.

When I ask him about his role in Baichung’s development, all he says is “It’s all about the player, his hard work, and his potential. I’d taken a big risk in bringing him to Kolkata at such a young age, but Baichung’s maturity ensured that he succeeded.”

On the topic of Baichung, almost all Indian football fans watched the game in Munich where our very own skipper rubbed shoulders with the likes of Seedorf, Ballack, and Van Persie among others, and even scored twice during the 90 minutes. He adds, “It’s been an age old dream of mine to see Baichung play in Europe. I had gone with him to Munich for the Goal4Africa game, and it was almost as if my dreams became reality then and there.”

Mr. Bhutia, who works for the government in the capacity of a principal chief engineer and also is the Vice President of the Sikkim FA, was one of the founders of the famous Boys Club in Sikkim in 1988, where Baichung played as a youngster. Presently, he’s the Technical Director of the United Sikkim Sports Club (USSC), the team that sprung a surprise by ousting the more accomplished Simla Youngs in the qualifying round of the Governor’s Gold Cup, and went down fighting in the pre-quarters.

The USSC also has Baichung as one of its board members, and does its bit for the development of young players in the region. The team comprises mainly of local young talent, but also stars as many as four Nigerians, brought in for the tournament. He points out, “Our focus will always be the development of local players, but we needed a little experience and that zing to do well in this tournament, so we brought them in. They are very talented, and are at par with other Nigerians playing all over the country. Moreover, our players learn so much from them everyday, that it’s a part of their development as players. If we can create another 4-5 Baichung’s, there’ll be nothing like it.”

He goes on to hail the impact the Nigerians have had on his team, and Indian football in general, and commends their attitude towards the sport, despite having grown up in harsh and difficult conditions. “The conditions in Nigeria aren’t easy to become a professional sportsman, but these lads have shown great attitude and hard work in getting till here. And contrary to public perception, they are disciplined and professional in their approach.”

Speaking of Nigerians, if there’s one who’s made a telling impact on Indian football, it has to be Chima Okorie. The former Mohun Bagan player was a fans’ favourite in Kolkata, and Mr. Bhutia tells us that it was more of the same in Sikkim, if not more! “Chima was always loved here immensely, no matter who he played for. In fact, I remember, on one occasion, he was red carded in a game here, and the entire state went up in protest. Needless to say, the red card was later revoked!”

If there’s one thing you can sense when meeting Mr. Karma Bhutia, it’s that he has that burning desire to help Indian football, and create more Baichung’s, who can take India to the next level. His administrative, tactical, and managerial expertise has seen many talented players been produced from the state, but he still as modest and humble as ever, constantly pondering over what Indian football needs, and what role he could play in providing just that.

Governor's Gold Cup: Three Star Coach Eyes Revenge

Revenge will be top in the list of priorities for Nepal club Three Star when they face a rampaging Tata Football Academy (TFA) in a mouth-watering semi-final match of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament on 23rd October at the Paljor Stadium.

“We lost to TFA in 2005 here and this time, we want to get our revenge”, said Upendra Man Singh, Three Star coach.

The prospects of paying back to TFA looks more bright with the Nepal side coach seeking reinforcements from Kathmandu.

“Our six regular players who were doing national duty in the tournament in Malaysia returned today back to Kathmandu and I am trying to get them here for the semi-finals,” informed the coach.

Hampered by the absence of the above six regulars, the Three Star coach had fielded a junior team with most of the players below 17 years in today’s quarterfinals against a physical BSF side.

The Nepal club walked past the BSF team by two goals to one evoking a happy response from the coach.

“Full credit goes to our junior boys. They proved that they can match our senior players and won the hearts of the Sikkimese people with their game”, said Singh.

A fuming BSF coach Avatar Singh barked a stern ‘no comments’ when asked for his comments on his side’s loss. A wrestling style dumping his chair to his disappointed players at the end of the game summed up his poor sportsmanship.

Governor's Gold Cup: Three Star Enter Semis

Nepal’s top club Three Star successfully landed in the roaring cauldron of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup by running past a clueless Border Security Force (BSF) 2-1 in their first outing at the Paljor Stadium.

The first steps towards the coveted Cup were firmly planted thanks to a lion hearted display by the junior players of Three Star in today’s victory.

To boost its chances, the Nepal club is calling for more senior legs from Kathmandu for their semi-final clash against a rampaging Tata Football Academy (TFA) on October 23.

As expected, any match involving Nepal clubs fetches a capacity crowd in the 20,000 seater Paljor Stadium and today was no exception. Gangtokians gave up their afternoon to throng the stadium and root for their favourite team.

In the quickest goal of the tournament, Rupesh KC gave the lead to Three Star in the first minute even as the BSF players and the crowds were just settling in. The lanky central midfielder was given all the time and space to glance his header into the far corner of the net from a Pukar Gahatraj free-kick. His goal triggered wild celebrations among the largely partisan crowd and set them in the right mood.

Consisting mostly of under-17 players, the Nepal side were not let down by its junior players who were not afraid to take on the more physically superior BSF players.

Given no space, the BSF team relied on the long balls in order to pass over the faster Nepal players and made its first attempt on the goal in the 35th minute. Avinash Thapa’s looping shot just dropped outside the bar. The first half ended in 1-0 with the scoreline in favour of the Nepal side.

The BSF team came back strongly after the break and was able to break the Nepal defence repeatedly in the first 15 minutes. However, the Nepal side managed to weather the storm and then gradually changed momentum towards the rival’s goal.

BSF winger Banti Singh made a searing run down the right flank against the run of play and side stepped past two defenders before delivering a low cross to Avinash Thapa waiting in the penalty box. Thapa coolly volleyed the cross past the Three Star goalkeeper stunning the crowd.

BSF’s joy was short-lived as five minutes later Three Star defender Sobindra Shrestha curled a free-kick into the net for the winning goal.

Governor's Gold Cup: Three Star To Take On BSF Today

The much anticipated team, Three Star from Nepal has landed in Sikkim and gets straightaway involved in a mouth-watering contest between a formidable BSF team in tomorrow’s quarterfinals of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup being played here at Paljor Stadium.

Three Star club is a major crowd puller here in this Himalayan state. The team had reached finals in the last edition of Gold Cup and was defeated by its bitter rival NRT, another Nepal club.

This time, it is up to Three Star to keep the Nepal flag flying high in the premier tournament in the entire Eastern Himalayan region. However, Nepal’s challenge does not look sharper compared to last year as six regular players of Three Star are currently on national duty.

“Our six main players are playing for the national team in Merdeka Cup at Malaysia. But we have brought talented junior players who are playing or knocking the doors of the national team”, said Upendra Man Singh, the coach of the Three Star club.

“The players are the best in Nepal and have played many matches”, he added.

Upendra himself a former goalie with the Nepal national side has played on four occasions in the Gold Cup and this time he is coming back as a coach.

On their tomorrow’s opponents, Upendra said: “BSF is traditionally counted as a good team. It would have helped us if we had got a chance to see them in their previous match”.

Boosting the morale of Three Star club, a Nepal MP has also arrived along with the team to pep up the players. Raj Kazi Maharjan, an MP from Lalitpur constituency expressed his hopes that the Nepal club will reach the finals. He has specially escorted the Three Star club to provide his moral support.

Governor's Gold Cup: Cheema Blasts His Players

New Delhi Heroes coach Cheema Okerie blasted his players for their woeful display in today's 2-1 loss against Titanium Kerala.

"Our boys did not play even 30 percent of their normal game. We had the game in hand but we gifted two goals to the opposition", said a fuming Okerie after the match.

Okerie was particular severe on his goalkeeper Joby Joseph who committed a blunder in the first goal the team conceded.

On the other hand, Titanium coach Rajeev Kumar gave credit to New Delhi Heroes for putting a good display.

"They were the better side. It was our first match in these unfamiliar conditions here at Sikkim but our boys played well", he said.

“My boys will play much better in the semis,” added Kumar.

Titanium must give a better performance in the semis as they run into a formidable Army XI, their Southern neighbours. Army XI is based at Bangalore and have beaten Kerala clubs in the recent past.

“We give Army XI lot of respect.”

Governor's Gold Cup: Kumar Creating Waves In Gold Cup

As the 30th All India Governor's Gold Cup football tournament being played here at Paljor Stadium enters into semi-finals in the next two days, several stars have bitten the dust while new players have come good in this premier tournament in the Northeast.

Among these new boys knocking the doors of top league clubs, Tata Football Academy (TFA) playmaker Subodh Kumar is the bright face of a rising Indian football scenario. In his two matches, Kumar has attracted much attention with his punishing runs and plays all over the pitch.

Always on the move, this pint sized player hounds the opposition forwards, harasses the defense and virtually controls the midfield covering the entire length and breadth of the field. This game style of the hardworking Kumar was much noticed during yesterday's crucial game against DKKKS, a Bangladesh club.

TFA cruised past the Bangladesh side by four goals to nil and entered into the semis of the Gold Cup. A large credit goes to Kumar in this easy victory.

The 18 year old TFA lad dominated the midfield and nipped potential dangers in the bud. Despite his short size by football standards, Kumar was more than a match to the tall Bangladesh players.

Even as the Bangladesh team tried to attack (which were few) down the flanks, Kumar was always there to assist the back four and shepherd the ball out of danger to launch sweeping moves into the rival's box.

Most of the attacking moves originated from Kumar's boots and the fourth goal resulted due to his brilliant effort in the 85th minute. Kumar lashed onto a wayward clearance from DKKKS defence and ran into the rival's box taking two defenders along with him. Instead of sending a cross to his team-mates waiting on the right side, Kumar then coolly back-heeled the ball to the unmarked Robin Singh whose left footer crashed into the net.

"We were playing as per our coach (Ranjan Chowdhury) strategy which was to give no breathing space. We played pressing football and always snatched the ball away from the opposition team", said Kumar after the match.

Kumar, who is into his third year with TFA, has already represented India in the national U-19 football team. He proudly recollected his goals against Lebanon and Oman in the AFC games.

Comparing the two games he played in the Gold Cup, Kumar said that he and his team mates could not have played better in the first match.

"It is always difficult to play in the first game,” he said.

“But today we played as per the game plan.”

Kumar is from Ranchi and dreams of making to the Indian senior football squad.

"I want to play for the Indian football team", he said.

Governor's Gold Cup: Titanium Beat New Delhi Heroes

Titanium captain Usman poked his team to a 2-1 victory over New Delhi Heroes in today's match here at Paljor Stadium to clinch a semi-final berth in the 30th All India Governor's Gold Cup football tournament.

With both teams deadlocked in the 1-1 draw, Usman scrambled past his marker to direct a cross into the net for the deciding goal in the 55th minute. Titanium winger Rajeev had provided the cross after a fine run down the right flank.

Stung by the goal, New Delhi Heroes made several attempts to find the equalizer for the second time in the match but was thwarted by Kerala defense especially by the bulky stopper Shabeer.

It was Shabeer who had given the lead to the Kerala side in the 16th minute when his free kick from near the centre line was let in by the New Delhi goalkeeper Joby Joseph. The goalkeeper mistimed his save and dived over the shot gifting the Kerala side the lead.

New Delhi Heroes came back to the game in the dying minutes of the first half. It was Shabeer again who was involved in the equalizer. The giant central defender needlessly dumped New Delhi Heroes striker Itaeu in the box conceding a penalty which was promptly booted home by Manoj Joshi.

However, Titanium coach Rajeev Kumar had the last laugh over his former rival Cheema Okerie who was the coaching the New Delhi Heroes.

Titanium now runs against a formidable Army XI in the first semi-final match on October 22.

Novel Ways Of Promotion - Music

The Governor’s Gold Cup has kicked-off and the Sikkim FA has come out with novel ways to attract the crowds by having a theme song for the tournament which is very youthful and appealing. This is certainly a lesson for the people who run the I-League. Are you there?

The north-eastern region is known for its love for football and rock music. Every second fellow on the street would have played football and would be talking of Metallica and Jimi Hendrix.

The media manager for the Governor’s Gold Cup Mr.Shyam Pradhan had this in mind when he asked his sons – Girish and Yogesh to come up with a song.

“I asked Yogesh that can we do something and he composed the music instantly. Girish wrote the lyrics and lent his voice to the song. It was all done in a couple of days,” informs Mr.Pradhan.

The song was released way back in 2003-04 season when the Governor’s Gold Cup returned to the Paljor Stadium which underwent renovation for four years.

Since then, football fans in Sikkim have been humming this song at the stadiums as it has been advertised aggressively on the local TV and radio channels.

“The lyrics are Football my name, football my game, football my pride, football my passion…,” said Yogesh.

And what got the two brothers to come out with this song?

“We are musicians and this was part of our metal band Anarchy,” adds Yogesh, who is an audio engineering student and now is part of another band called ‘Carnage’.

Does the I-League have a song of its own? Not that I have heard of…

Governor's Gold Cup: Striker vs Keeper Once Again!

Chima Okorie will face up to old adversary Rajiv Kumar as both men try to guide their respective sides into the semi finals of the Governor's Gold Cup...

Former bitter adversaries (on the field), Cheema Okeri and Rajiv Kumar will be plotting each other once more as their respective teams New Delhi Heroes and Titanium (Kerala) clash on Monday at Paljor Stadium here for a semifinal berth in the 30th All India Governor's Gold Cup football tournament.

Cheema is coaching New Delhi Heroes while Kumar is coaching the Kerala side. Speaking to reporters, Kumar recollected how he and Cheema always used to play against each other right from the university level. "I was the goalkeeper for my university and club, Titanium while Cheema used to play against me from Mohan Bagan. We used to compete against each other as players and now we are playing each other as coaches. We have a lot of respect for each other", said Kumar.

Commenting on his team, the Titanium coach said that it's a basically a young side. The odds are pitted against the Kerala side as it is their first match in the tournament. "The climatic conditions here in Sikkim are completely different from Kerala and also it our first match", Kumar said.

Meanwhile, New Delhi Heroes coach Cheema was his usual cool self when asked to comment on tomorrow's game against Titanium. "There are no special preparations whatsoever and we are going to be our normal self for the match against Titanium", he said.

However, Cheema added that his team is very unfamiliar with the Kerala side. "I have no clue what their team looks like. But If we play 30 percent better than our last game, I think we will win. We could not play better football in our previous game as it was our first match here in totally different conditions", Cheema said.

Governor's Gold Cup: Tata Thrash DKKKS Bangladesh

Tata Football Academy entered the semi finals of the Governor's Gold Cup in style, thrashing Bangladesh Club DKKKS 4-0...

In a thumping win, Tata Football Academy (TFA) thrashed a listless Bangladesh club, 4-0 in today's match to storm into the semis of the 30th All India Governor's Gold Cup being played here at Paljor Stadium.

Goals from Jagtar Singh, Gurjindar Kumar, Niroshan Mani and Robin Singh completed the rout. TFA completely dominated the game from the word go and scored early in the 19th minute against DKKKS, the Bangladesh club due to the misadventure on the part of its goalkeeper, Aminur Islam.

The Bangladesh side goalkeeper rushed well outside his box to clear a long ball but was beaten to it by TFA player Jaganath Saha who passed the ball to his striker Jagtar Singh. Even then the goal could have been prevented as Singh's weak shot had been covered by the Bangladesh defender Narayan Paul. However, Paul managed to kick only air when he tried to stop the ball which rolled into the net. The game ended at 1-0 at the interval.

After the break, TFA players continued from where they left the match in the first half and sprayed a flurry of attempts in the Bangladesh goal. They were rewarded in the 66th minute with a fine shot by Gurjindar Singh. Any distant attempts of Bangladesh club coming back to the game was killed in the 74th minute when TFA substitute Nirosh Mani slammed home the third goal on a rebound.

Robin Singh completed the rout when playmaker Subodh Kumar backheeled the ball into his path to poke home the fourth goal of the match for TFA.

With this win, TFA became the second team to clinch a berth in the last 4 along with Army XI.

Governor's Gold Cup: Armymen March On To Semis

Army XI beat the Jammu & Kashmir Bank side today at the Paljor Stadium, in a display that'll send a message to other tournament contenders...

In a display of free flowing and fast football, Army XI today brushed past Jammu and Kashmir Bank by 1-0 to storm into the semis of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold football tournament in a match played here at Paljor Stadium.

The victory margin would have been much higher had the armymen capitalized on several opportunities throughout the match. Finally when the game looked to be heading towards extra time, midfielder Thiru blasted a loose ball into the J&K Bank’s net in the 81st minute. The ball had fallen favourably into his stride during a goal mouth melee.

Earlier, Army XI had a goal disallowed in the first half for offside. The army team also saw a shot hit the bar in the 50th minute of the game. Much fitter and skillful, Army XI dominated the game from the word go and created heavy pressure for J&K Bank.

A goal was always in the cards as the Army XI moved ahead with purpose and vision, and only the finishing touches were missing. Credit also goes to J&K Bank defense especially its Nigerian stopper Martins Kolewole for preventing a blood bath.

Army XI now awaits the winners of the third quarterfinal match between Titanium (Kerela) and New Delhi Heroes in the semifinals.

Governor's Gold Cup: Monks Are Footy Mad!

The Governor's Gold Cup is a mega event in Sikkim to say the least, and attracts people from all walks of life to the ground. Strangely, monasteries in the region are mysteriously less crowded during matchdays. Any guesses why?

Their passion for the game was first portrayed in an award winning Hollywood production - The Cup- directed by Khyentse Norbu, a monk himself - but the people in red robes here are really crazy for soccer. This is evident from the large number of monks who make it to the Paljor stadium here to watch teams and players in action on the field vying for the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament every day.

Even if there is less turnout of spectators in some of the intial matches, the tournament has a steady and loyal group of football fans in red robes that come to watch the matches in progress everyday giving their holy rituals at monasteries a miss! Monks from different age groups are a standout feature in the stands of the stadium in the flowing red robes.

A considerable number of monks had turned out yesterday to lend their support and vocals to the Tata Football Academy (TFA) who entered into the quarterfinals by defeating Railways FC in tie-breaker. An ardent soccer fan, Chepel, who is studying at the Chorten monastery here said, “Our favourite team is TFA who will lift the Gold Cup for the second time”.

Chepel was accompanied by several of his monk friends who have utilized the Sunday break to watch today’s game against Army XI and Jammu and Kashmir Bank. “We think that Army XI will win this match as they are much stronger and physically fit”, said Tashi, another monk studying here in a monastery in Gangtok.

But the overall favourite team of the monks religiously following the tournament is TFA. And the ‘red’ numbers are set to swell up on Monday when their favourite team TFA runs into a strong Bangladesh XI for a berth in the last four. The monks in their flowing red and yellow robes dot the hills side gallery and sometimes make it to the galleries on the right side of the stadium. A few of them even managed to find a seat near football icon Cheema Okorie, who is coaching the New Delhi Heroes in this tournament.

However, the monks are missing their two favourite teams-Bhutan and Tibetan National Football Academy. Both these two teams who used to be regular attractions in the Gold Cup here could not attend this 30th edition. Several monks studying here are from Bhutan while there remains a traditional support base for the Tibetan side. Despite the absence of their favourite teams, monks are coming to watch the Gold Cup and their numbers grow as the tournament progresses to the final showdown.

The organizers, Sikkim Football Association acknowledges the steady and loyal turnout of the monks and do not forget to thank the monks every year for their presence when they give the vote of thanks after the final. SFA general secretary Menla Ethenpa said that the association is seriously thinking to hold an inter monastery tournament for the monks studying in various monasteries in Sikkim from next year. “The monks not only come to see the Gold Cup action but also show their presence during all other tournaments including the Gangtok football league”, said Mr. Ethenpa.

With such a loyal fan base in place, a little more visibility for the tournament could do wonders for it, and evnetually make it evolve into an event which is looked forward to by all Indian football lovers, not just the Sikkimese. And if we indeed want the country to progress football-wise, we as fans need to show a lot of spirit, something that we could probably learn from the monks.

Governor's Gold Cup: Chima Floored By Young Opponents

Chima Okorie reserved many words of praise for Shyam Thapa's young side from Kolkata, and said that the day was all about them, despite them ending up on the losing side...

The dexterity and the skills of the youthful Mohun Bagan SAIL football academy team floored former star striker and New Delhi heroes coach Cheema Okerie in today's second game of the All India Governor's gold cup tournament played at the Paljor stadium here.

Despite a win against the Mohun Bagan SAIL through a tie breaker in the pre-quarter final match today, Okerie, instead of celebrating the victory with his team, rushed to where his opponents were and was seen amidst them consoling and appreciating the way they played and put up a fight.

Pointing to the young team, Okerie said: “Everything today is about these kids. I'm so impressed by their maturity. This is the team. They were unlucky not to have won but they are brilliant. What you see here is the future of Indian football. I'm not happy with my team if the youngsters like these can play such a game”. When asked of his team's performance Cheema refused comment while giving a thumbs up to his opponents.

On the other hand, Mohan Bagan SAIL manager Shyam Thapa attributed to his youthful team’s inexperience for today’s loss. "My boys could not hold their lead and we could not hang on for the last 15 minutes. This is due to the inexperience of my young boys and that’s why I am focusing on participating in as many tournaments as possible", he said.

The Kolkata side will be leaving to Namchi, South Sikkim to participate in the Chief Minister’s Gold Cup.

Governor's Gold Cup: Heroes Go Through On Penalties

Chima Okorie's New Delhi Heroes scraped past Shyam Thapa's Mohun Bagan SAIL 4-2 on penalties, after a thrilling contest ended 2-2 after 90 minutes...

In a match billed as the clash of two former football giants, Cheema Okorie and Shyam Thapa, it was the former who had the last laugh when his team New Delhi Heroes emerged victorious over Mohan Bagan SAIL in a penalty shootout.

Okorie was coaching New Delhi Heroes while Thapa was managing the young Kolkata side. Both team were evenly matched and played a fast paced game which ended in 2-2 draw during the normal 90 minutes leaving the match to be decided in penalties.

Two Mohan Bagan SAIL players Subanker Dey and Malswam Zuala saw their shots saved by the Delhi goalkeeper. Four players from New Delhi Heroes converted their penalties successfully making the fifth penalty inconsequential. It was 4-2 in favour of New Delhi Heroes in the penalties.

Earlier in the match, the youthful Kolkata side could not hold their 2-1 lead and conceded a late penalty in the 72nd minute. Itaue easily beat the Mohan Bagan SAIL goalkeeper with his penalty shot giving him his second goal in the match.

It was Itaue who had given New Delhi Heroes an early lead in the 5th minute with a powerful long ranger. L.Daniel equalized for Mohan Bagan SAIL in the 34th minute with a penalty shot sending the crowd in a frenzy who were deeply rooting for Thapa’s team.

In the 55th minute, Praveen Kumar made it 2-1 for the Kolkata side with a fine header. He headed a corner which sailed over the Delhi goalkeeper and into the net. During the match, the young players from the Kolkata side were dictating the tempo with their pace and exuberance but had to contend with tall and powerful Delhi defenders. The game ended in 2-2 draw and the match was decided in tie-breaker which the Delhi side won 4-2.

New Delhi Heroes now face a Kerala club, Titanium on October 20.

Governor's Gold Cup: J&K Want to Win Hearts

Jammu & Kashmir Bank's Coach Mr. Abdul Majeed was impressed with his team's performance on the day which saw them beat USSC, and also had a few good words to say about the atmosphere all around Gangtok...

Triumphant after comprehensively beating the home side, JK Bank coach Abdul Majeed said that they are here to win the hearts of the Sikkimese people by playing entertaining football.

“It’s a great pleasure to play in the Gold Cup at Sikkim for the first time. We want to win the hearts of Sikkimese people with our football”, said Majeed.

Commenting on the match, Majeed said that he knew his side will win although everyone believed that United Sikkim Sporting Club was a better side. “Everyone said that USSC will win as they were a good team with four Nigerian recruits. We waited for them to show their game in the first halt and went on the counter attack in the second half which fetched us two gaols”, he said.

Majeed is a former Indian football team captain and has played for several years with East Bengal and Mohan Bagan. “We knew we are against a competitive team and hence we arrived here two days ago to get acclimatized”, he added. Regarding his side, Majeed said that several leading players have come out from his club. “Everyone knows the turmoil Jammu and Kashmir is in and we don’t get the proper environment to develop our football. But we are here to win the hearts of Sikkim”, he said.

On the other hand, USSC coach Sherap Lepcha rued the missed opportunities by his players which played a major role in today’s loss. We missed a lot of chances and couple of them were sitters, he said. “It was their (JK Bank) day”, Lepcha said.

With this loss of USSC, Sikkim Police is the only other local team left in the competition and they take on two time Gold Cup champions BSF (Jhalandar) tomorrow.

Governor's Gold Cup: J&K Bank Halt United Sikkim

Baichung Bhutia's club United Sikkim Sports Club (USSC) bowed out of the Governor's Gold Cup this afternoon, after going down to Jammu & Kashmir Bank by two goals to nil...

Lightening does not strike twice. Baichung Bhutia’s home club United Sikkim Sporting Club (USCC) went down fighting against Jammu and Kashmir Bank by 2 goals to nil in today’s match of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup played here at Paljor Stadium.

USSC had previously beaten Simla Youngs, Delhi to enter into the pre-quarterfinal stage where the Sikkimese club ran into the J&K side coached by former Indian football team captain Abdul Majeed.

The match quickly changed into a power game as the Sikkimese side dominated the early proceedings and Avinash Thapa came close to scoring as in the early minutes. However, the injury to USCC goalkeeper KT Lepcha in the 26th minute cost the home dearly in the second half. His replacement Amit Haldar could only parry a shot by J&K Bank striker Ibrahim into the direction of quick footed S.Rizwan who slotted the loose ball into the net. Rizwan’s goal sent the home crowd into a deep silence.

USSC quickly regrouped and went into search for an equalizer and came very close on two occasions in quick succession. A well crafted move between USSC’s Nigerian recruits Collins and Ike placed the former into a very good position but could not finish the job. Moments earlier, Eze’s header was goal bounded but the bankmen’s goalkeeper managed to make an excellent save.

Minutes later, a defensive error saw J&K Bank Nigerian recruit Ibrahim muscle his past two USSC defenders and pulled the ball back for Satwinder Singh to slam home the second goal in the 81st minute. The second goal killed any chances for the home team to stage a comeback for the second successive match.

With this loss, the home team’s run ends while the bankmen run into Army XI in the quarterfinals on October 18.

Goal.com Chief On Governor's Gold Cup...

For all you Goal.com readers who don’t know, Mr. Kapil Chettri, the real world identity of ‘ckapil@Goal.com’ (as you have seen littered over various parts of the site), is the Business Development Head for Goal.com India, and is the brain behind the functioning of the company in the country.

Mr. Chettri has been in Gangtok for the past few days, soaking up the atmosphere of the 30th All India Governor’s Gold Cup, which has begun amidst a lot of fan following, music, and colour in the city.

Says Mr. Chettri, “I’m not surprised at the success of the tournament, as domestic football tournaments are way bigger crowd pullers than even domestic cricket tournaments in India. But the carnival atmosphere all over town, even in the evenings when the matches are over, is simply phenomenal. Everyone, right from the taxi driver to the hotel receptionist is talking football, which is heartening to see.”

It’s no exaggeration, as the strategic placement of the event between the Dussehra and Diwali makes the whole month one big festival for the Sikkimese, and the way they enjoy and celebrate is incomparable and simply unmatched by any other football event in any other city or state in India. The tournament has been going on for 30 years non-stop, a record in the country, which is a result of some wonderful planning and organizing by the Sikkim FA.

Mr.Chettri, who was also the Guest of Honour on the second day of the tournament, gives full credit to the SFA, and says, “Kudos to the organizers, for showing exemplary commitment, foresight, and vision. It’s rare to see such a well-organized football event in India, and that’s because every person involved knows his/her role. It is only because of events like these that the state has produced players like Bhaichung, Nirmal Chhetri, and many others.”

He reserves special praise for the main team behind the tournament, SFA President Mr. Tempo Bhutia, Vice President Mr. Karma Bhutia, Gen Secy Mr. Menla Ethenpa, Mr. B.K.Roka, and Publicity Secretary Mr. Shyam Pradhan.

According to the man, the lack of I-League clubs isn’t really a major problem for the local people.

“The Sikkimese know their football, and enjoy good competition much more than mere big names”, he says, echoing the views of SFA President Mr. Tempo Bhutia. However, that doesn’t stop the man from lamenting the lack of big clubs at the event, which also sees the locals miss out on a chance to watch Sikkimese heroes in action.

“The AIFF should try and avoid collision of any of their calendar events with the Governor’s Gold Cup. It’s the longest uninterrupted football cup in India, and sees 20000 plus people pack the stands each day, which may not even be the case for some of the I-League games.”

Not drifting from the topic of the AIFF, Mr. Chettri, who has grown up in the northeast himself, points out, “The AIFF should ensure that such initiatives all over the country receive moral, financial, and organizational support.”

Talking about Goal.com’s involvement in the event, he points out that the site’s strategy in India right from the start has been to promote football from the grassroots, and report organizations that do the same, which is the only way the sport can be taken forward in the country.

Subsequently, he makes an interesting statement, outlining his vision for the website in the country.

“At the moment, there is a gap between the football stars of the country, and the football fans of the country. The stars are waiting for the fans, and the fans are waiting for the stars. Goal.com wants to become that platform, or the bridge, where the two can meet to take football to another level altogether.”

Meanwhile, officials of the Sikkim FA are delighted with the website’s involvement in the event, as for the first time, the tournament that was confined to the people of the hills can now be followed by football fans all over India and because of Goal.com reach beyond India.

The SFA and Goal.com have also intimated that they have entered into a mutual agreement that will see both organizations complimenting each other in various ways. The details are not out at the moment, and will be revealed in the days to come.

And we can’t even get a word from Mr. Chettri before he trots off to get back among the fans to follow the live action, and I don’t blame him.

There could be nothing more interesting than the tournament in town at the moment, and for the next 10 days!

GG Cup Brought Me Into Limelight - Bhaichung

The 30th Sikkim Governor’s Gold Cup has kicked off and the tournament holds special importance for the man whose name is synonymous with Indian football in the modern era – Bhaichung Bhutia.

The Indian skipper first came to notice with his impressive performance in this very tournament more than 16 years ago.

“This is the tournament which brought me into limelight and helped me enter East Bengal in those days,” said Bhaichung nostalgically.

Would he still want to play in the Governor’s Gold Cup, a question which his mentor and uncle Karma Bhutia requested Goal.com to ask.

“I am employed by Mohun Bagan and I can’t decide which tournament I want to play. If Mohun Bagan would have played the tournament, then I would have featured.”

The Governor’s Gold Cup is a very important tournament in Sikkim and the government backs the event by allowing the officials working in their office to leave for the games an hour before the scheduled kick-off if they produce the tickets.

But Bhaichung feels that tournament isn’t just about Sikkim.

“It is still the biggest football tournament in the north-eastern region. It was big in the national scene as well before the National League commenced.”

Bhaichung, who hails from Tinkitam village in Sikkim, feels that the tournament is a big festival in the north-eastern calendar.

“The Governor’s Gold Cup is being played for so many years and the buzz is still on. It’s a great festival.”

Bhaichung may not be in action in the tournament but he is being represented through his team United Sikkim Sports Club, who won the opening day clash against Shimla Youngs.

“I spoke to the team after they won. Shimla Youngs isn’t an easy side to win against. My message to them is to continue doing well and keep improving. The first target is to enter the quarter-finals.”

However, the rookies from national U-19 team will fill the void.

“We have planned to assemble some players from U-19 team and some other clubs”, Club Coach Bal Gopal Maharjan said, “We will definitely compete in the tournament thinking the title in mind”.

Earlier in 29th edition, both Nepalese teams were in the final but NRT defeated Three Star to seal the bet. However, they are also trying to call their three players who are plying their trade in Bangladesh.

It is not yet sure whether striker Santosh Saukhala and defender Lok Bandhu Gurung will return from Bangladesh reportedly ending their salary dispute with the clubs.

“We know that teams are strong in the competition but they (opponents) should also know that we are coming to the competition” Maharjan cautioned other teams.

Three Star Club will leave Nepal on October 19, having the quarterfinal match on 21st October.

Governor's Gold Cup: It's Shyam Thapa vs Chima Okerie

Looking forward to the third day of the Governor's Gold Cup, one can't help but focus especially on the game between Mohan Bagan SAIL and New Delhi Heroes, in which the spotlight will be on the two star managers...

More than the contesting teams, all eyes will be on the coaches of Mohan Bagan SAIL and New Delhi Heroes in a much anticipated show down between Shyam Thapa and Cheema Okorie tomorrow in the pre-quarterfinal match of the All India Governor’s Gold Cup here at Paljor Stadium here.

Both Thapa and Okorie, both football legends in their era are coaching Mohan Bagan SAIL and New Delhi Heroes respectively. The two clubs have been pitted against each other in tomorrow’s game which is a virtual final as the tournament is being organized in a knock out format.

The organizers, Sikkim Football Association (SFA), expects a capacity crowd in tomorrow’s game as both Thapa and Okorie are famous in the hill region. “Shyam Thapa is a hero in these parts while people here still recall the exploits of Cheema during the Gold Cup”, said Menla Ethanpa, SFA general secetary.

Knowing that any slip will see his club out of the tournament, Mohan Bagan SAIL coach Shyam Thapa kept his cards close to his chest when asked about his strategies against Okorie’s team. “Any team coached by Cheema Okorie is bound to be good and New Delhi Heroes have already played in the junior national league. Their team is good”, said Thapa.

He said that it would have helped a lot if he could have seen New Delhi Heroes in action earlier. “The Delhi side is much unknown and it is our first encounter with this club. I will be making tactical changes as the match progress”, he said.

About his side, the coach said that the boys in Mohan Bagan SAIL are good but has not received sufficient exposure. “There are good boys in my team who are from Sikkim, Mizoram, Manipur and other parts of the country. Only thing is that we don’t have much matches under our belt while New Delhi Heroes have been regularly playing matches”, said Thapa.
