I league teams Sporting Clube de Goa

Sporting Clube de Goa is a sports club based in the Indian state of Goa. It is renowned for its football team built on the lines of Portuguese giants Sporting Clube de Portugal and adopting a similar club crest.

The club Cidade de Goa (Portuguese for City of Goa) was purchased by Sporting's current owners and renamed as Sporting Clube de Goa in 1999.

Sporting made its debut in the 2003-04 season of the Indian Nationall Football League Premier Division, and were on the verge of winning their first league championship but lost out on the last day when Dempo Sports Club pipped them to the title. Their season was marred by a horrific bus accident which ruled out 4 key players for the whole season, while several others were injured. However, led by Nigerian import Dudu Omagbemi, they managed to complete their matches in a very short span of time after being given a few weeks off so that their players could recover, and heroically came second ahead of traditional powerhouses East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Salgaocar and Mahindra United.

I-league teams Vasco SC

The Vasco Sports Club is a football (soccer) club from Goa, India.

In 1951, residents from the port town of Vasco da Gama, Goa, including the Portuguese garrison stationed there formed a football club called Clube de Desportos Vasco da Gama.

It was named after the famous Brazilian club, and similar colours were adopted by it. The open fields where the present Tilak stadium is built, were the practice grounds for the players. Later a club house was built near by, which still stands today.

During the last five decades the club participated in most of the major tournaments in India. The sixties and seventies were the most productive years for the club and they won some of the major tournaments during that time like the Kerala Trophy, Stafford Cup, Bandodkar Gold Trophy, Chakola Gold Trophy and Sait-Nagjee Trophy. Sadly, it failed to stamp its mark in other tournaments like the Rovers Cup, Bordoloi Shield, Nehru Memorial Tournament, having lost out in the final.

As far as honours at home go, the club won the Goa Football Association league title on six different occasions starting in 1954 until 1969 and is the oldest registered Club still participating in the State's top League competition, never once having been demoted in the Club's history.

After two decades of major victories, the 80's saw a decline in the efficacy of the Club in terms of All India and State Tournaments. However, it retained a prominent position among the top five Clubs in Goa. The decline started when the Bandekar group withdrew support and there were no new white knights to fund the increasing cost of top class players.

Over the last five decades the club has received a lot of financial help from many philanthropic benefactors not only from the port town of Vasco, but from different parts of Goa and Goans residing abroad.

Undaunted, from the mid 90's the Club, under the leadership of Nõel da Lima Leitão, took the help of Zeca Miglietti from Portugal, former Benfica defender, as Coach for its training programme. His hard work saw the Club reach the Quarterfinal phase of the KBL Federation Cup and among the contenders for qualification to the Premier Division National League.

Presently the new management is headed by Mario Leitão as the President, Mario De Souza as Secretary and Stanley Pereira as Treasurer. The membership drive undertaken by the new management has begun to yield results and the general response from the fans has been encouraging.

I-league teams Mumbai FC

Mumbai FC is an Indian football club based in Mumbai. Their home ground is the Thakur College ground in Kandivali.

It is a recently launched club (2007), by the Essel Group and they have roped in big names, such as manager Henry Menezes and India international striker Abhishek Yadav. Having won promotion from I-League 2nd Division 2008 they will participate in the I-League in late 2008.

About The Club

Mumbai FC, the concept, was born in the minds of a few sports-minded individuals, who felt the dire need for a community based football club to unleash the huge fountain of untapped talent in the city. The concept was shared and liked and the next step was putting together a pool of management talent that passionately believed in the same. Once this was achieved, the next logical step was setting up a team with a mixture of youth and experience and getting an experienced coach to guide the team’s fortunes.

These objectives were achieved in record time, so to say, and Mumbai FC was launched amidst great fanfare and pomp in the city on May 28, 2007. Current Indian international Abhisehk Yadav leads a bunch of talented players that has amongst its ranks internationals like Khalid Jamil, Noel Wilson, Lolendro Singh, Kalyan Choubey and exciting youngsters like Dane Pereira and Bengkok under the tutelage and guidance of renowned coach David Booth.

In the words of Amit Goenka, Director Essel Group, “Mumbai FC was launched with the credo that "every Mumbaikar who feels he or she has the talent to play football, in the age group of 8 years to 40 years, will get a chance to participate in the development of football culture in Mumbai".

I league teams Mohun Bagan

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club (Mohun Bagan AC) is a Sports Club, best known for its football team, based in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Mohun Bagan AC is one of the oldest football clubs in Asia, having been established on August 15, 1889 and was later declared as the National Club of India. The first President of this club was Bhupendra Nath Bose. Mohun Bagan club has a complete Football Academy in collaboration with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) at Durgapur.

The football team has been hugely successful since its establishment and has maintained its status as one of India's most successful club having won multiple trophies of national significance. Federation Cup (India), Rovers Cup, Durand Cup, IFA Shield and National & Domestic League to name a few. Mohun Bagan was the first Indian team to defeat a European team, when the team defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment, 2-1 to lift the 1911 IFA Shield. Mohun Bagan has carried on an intense local rivalry with the East Bengal Club.

History

Mohun Bagan Sporting Club, as it was initially known, was founded on 15th August 1889. The club's first meeting was held at 14, Balaram Ghosh Street in Kolkata and included several high profile individuals including Bhupendra Nath Bose who was later to become the President of the Indian National Congress. The club's first secretary was Jatindranath Basu.

The club's first ground was at the famous marble palace, known as Mohun Bagan Villa. It was situated at Fariapukur Street, in northern Kolkata. Not sufficiently large enough as football field, it is believed that Mohun Bagan played their first ever match on this very ground against the students of Eden Hindu hostel. The club's membership requirements at this time stipulated that the management required students to join with permission from their parents, and special attention was given to etiquette and education. Shortly before the club's first anniversary, students of Presidency College, who were also the members of Mohun Bagan, invited their professor, the famous grammatologist Prof. F.J. Rhow to visit. Rhow pointed out that due to a lack of facilities for sports such as shooting and angling, the word 'Athletic' would be more appropriate. Thus, the club came to be known as "Mohun Bagan Athletic Club". The 2nd anniversary assembly was presided by Sir Thomas Holland who was later appointed as a member of Governor General Council.

In 1891, the benevolence of the Maharaja of Shyampukur, Durga Charan Laha saw the club's ground relocated to his grounds at Shyampukur. Later, with the assistance of Mr. Harry Lee, the chairman of Kolkata Corporation, the club's ground moved to Shyam Square which it now shared with the Aryans Club and Bagbazar Club. Mohun Bagan's first tournament was the Coochbehar Cup, which was held in 1893. Mohun Bagan's first opponent team was a European team, the 'C' Company of Sussex Regiment.

The first sport to be played is reported to be football, but other games were soon introduced to the club. This included hockey, tennis, badminton and athletics. Cricket was introduced to the club's schedule in the 1900s. The annual athletics event at the club is held with great pomp and show.

The biggest event in the club calendar is the Mohun Bagan Day. This is held on July 29, which is the day the football team lifted the IFA Shield for the first time in 1911 defeating the British. "Mohun Bagan is not a football team. It is an oppressed country, rolling in the dust, which has just started to rise its head" - said Achintya Kumar Sengupta in "Kallol Jug" magazine after the historic victory of 1911 IFA Shield.

A postage stamp was issued by the Government of India in 1989 during the club's centenary year to commemorate the 1911 victory of the team. The then Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi honoured Mohun Bagan with the title as the "National Club of India" for boosting up the Indian Nationalism which occurred after this win.

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club has been chosen among the top 11 clubs by FIFA to form an Elite Task Force for club football. As of September 2007, there are representatives from clubs like Bayern Munich, River Plate and Manchester United. This task force will work for the betterment of the club football. From India, only Swapan Sadhan Basu, Honorary President of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club is the representative at FIFA representing Mohun Bagan

Major friendlies

Mohun Bagan got the opportunity to play against Pele (playing for New York Cosmos on 22nd September,1977) and that match resulted in a 2-2 draw in front of 100,000. Roger Milla (playing for Diamond club, on 21st November, 1990) also played a match against Mohun Bagan. Both the matches attracted a huge crowd.

Recently, Mohun Bagan hosted a friendly celebrating Oliver Kahn, the goalkeeper of Bayern Munich on 27 May, 2008 at the Salt Lake Stadium against Bayern Munich. The Star-packed Bayern Munich team, including stars like Oliver Kahn, Zé Roberto, Mark van Bommel and José Ernesto Sosa easily managed to win the match but Mohun Bagan, who were missing 5 of their star players (due to National duty) did not go down without a fight. The youngsters of Bagan earned much appreciation from the Bayern coach, Ottmar Hitzfeld. Ottmar Hitzfeld stated that Mohun Bagan played very well, in fact better than the national team of Indonesia, and much beyond his expectations. He also praised some Bagan players like Pachau Lalampuia and Isfaq Ahmed for their excellent performance. The match was played in front of a record breaking 125,000 people leaving the German team awestruck.

Stadium

The club plays most of their CPL matches at its own home ground, the 22,000 capacity Mohun Bagan Ground which is within the club premises. It is only stadium in the Maidan area of Kolkata to have concrete seats and flood-lights, built after being granted special permission from the Military (Grounds owners). Efforts are being made to modernize the stadium and the club premises to give it a more professional look, but they require military permission.

All I-League matches are played at the enigmatic Yuva Bharati Krirangan, also known as Salt Lake Stadium. Built in 1984, the Salt Lake Stadium is home the Indian national team which regularly fills the stadiums 120,000 capacity.

Fans

Right from the beginning there is a huge fan base of this club. Now Mohun Bagan's fans are seen almost everywhere in India. And there are some Mohun Bagan fan in other countries also. Generally about 40,000-50,000 supporters come to watch Mohun Bagan's derby matches in Salt Lake Stadium. I-league teams Mahindra United

Mahindra United is a professional football club based in Mumbai, India.Their home ground is the Cooperage Ground.
History
All work and no play can indeed make a company very dull. That’s why a simple club with a few games and basic amenities was set up in 1950. No one ever thought that this would grow into an establishment that ran a professional team and offered high quality facilities, incentives and allowances.
The shift was gradual. In 1956, a group of youngsters enrolled themselves as the Mahindra official team in the Bombay Football League and made valiant efforts to reach the top. To further improve the standards, the company provided a full- size football field for practice and training. At this point, with the football teams representing the company at tournaments in Bombay, the need for a sports club arose. So the Mahindra & Mahindra Allied Company Sports Club came into being in 1962.
Since then the team has gone from strength to strength, getting into Bombay’s senior division Harwood League in 1964 and earned the dashing sobriquet, ‘The Giant Killers’. Football was developing in Maharashtra and in Mahindra too. In 1969, Mr. Harish Mahindra was elected Vice President of Western India Football Association (WIFA). Mahindra & Mahindra Allied Company Sports Club, then known as the Orange Brigade, was the most popular team in Maharashtra after strong teams like TATA’s, Mafatlal’s and Caltex. The late 80’s saw Mahindra emerge as one of the most formidable teams in the country, attracting talented international players like
P. M. Shivdas, C. Mustafa, Jerry Bassi, Henry Menezes, Santosh Kashyap and Godfrey Pereira. Top teams like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting went all out to recruit the Mahindra players.
In 2000, the Mahindra Football Team underwent a total revamp and the Orange Brigade turned red. The team was renamed Mahindra United under the leadership of Mr. Alan Durante, Executive Director & President of the Automotive Sector. Committed support from the Chairman, Keshub Mahindra, and Managing Director & Vice Chairman, Anand Mahindra, set the ball rolling. Big names like
Raghavan, Derek Desouza, Harish Rao, Karel Stromsik, David Booth and Dhronacharya Awardee, Syed Nayeemuddin, have coached the team and taken it from victory to victory.
There's been no looking back since then. Mahindra United of Mumbai is the only team in Maharashtra to win the Durand Cup twice, which is the second oldest trophy in the world. It is also the first team in Maharashtra to win the Harwood League and the
Nadkarni Cup three times in a row. In fact, right now the Indian football team too, is led by the captain of Mahindra United.
